The Black Copper Marans is a rugged yet refined bird with deep black plumage washed in an iridescent green sheen and accented by rich copper feathers around the neck. Roosters have bolder coppering and a more dramatic presence, while hens keep things elegant with subtler highlights. Their feathered legs are a hallmark of the French standard, and add an extra touch of old-world charm to your flock.

In temperament, Black Copper Marans are steady, friendly, and quietly confident. They’re generally calm birds that fit well in mixed flocks and don’t seek drama. They appreciate attention without demanding it and are hardy enough to handle a variety of climates. They’re good foragers, moderately active, and often have a “keep calm and carry on” vibe that makes them easy to live with.

Marans hens produce some of the darkest chocolate-brown eggs in the poultry world, ranging from deep reddish brown to a glossy, near-mahogany shade. Hens typically lay 180–280 large eggs per year, with shell color that is usually spectacular early in the season, lightening as the season progresses, and darkening again until after molting.

The breed originated in the port town of Marans in western France during the 1800s. Local country hens were crossed with imported game birds brought in by sailors, resulting in hardy chickens with excellent foraging instincts and impressive eggs. Over time, selective breeding refined them into the elegant utility bird known today, with the Black Copper variety becoming especially prized for both beauty and egg color. They bring style, rustic sophistication, and eggs that look like they belong in a chocolatier’s window to your yard.
